The Open State
This notice explains what personal information we collect through the social confidence quiz at quiz.theopenstate.co.uk and the founding cohort application page at join.theopenstate.co.uk, and through our mailing list, why we collect it, and what your rights are.
The Open State is a trading name of Quies Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales, company number 17355473. Registered office: Suite A, 82 James Carter Road, Mildenhall, IP28 7DE.
Quies Ltd is the controller of your personal information. For any privacy question or request, email info@theopenstate.co.uk.
Your quiz answers and your result are worked out in your own browser. They are not sent to us, and we do not store them. You can take the quiz and read your full result without giving us any information.
The quiz is for adults aged 18 and over. It is an educational tool. It is not a medical or psychological assessment and it does not diagnose anything.
If you choose to subscribe to the Open State letter, we collect:
We do not link your quiz result to your email address.
If you apply for a place in the Unguarded founding cohort, we collect your first name, your email address and your answer to the application question. We use these to consider your application and to contact you about the cohort. Our lawful basis is that this is necessary to act on your request before giving you access to the course.
Applying does not add you to our mailing list. We only send you the letter if you tick the separate optional box.
If you are not offered a place, we delete your application within three months of the cohort starting. If you join the cohort, we keep your details and your feedback while the cohort runs and for as long as we need the feedback to improve the course. We will never publish anything you tell us, including as a testimonial, without asking you first.
We use your email address to send you the weekly Open State letter and occasional news about Open State courses. We use your topic choices to send you what is relevant to you. Our lawful basis is your consent, which you give by ticking the box and confirming by email.
You can withdraw consent at any time. Every email has an unsubscribe link, or you can email us and we will remove you.
We only send writing on social confidence and performance at work, and news about our own courses. We do not send third-party advertising. We never sell, rent or share your email address for anyone else's marketing.
These providers act on our instructions under contract. Some may process information outside the UK. Where that happens, it is covered by UK adequacy regulations or by contractual safeguards approved for international transfers.
The letter is also published on Substack. If you choose to subscribe there directly, Substack's own privacy policy applies to that subscription.
The quiz and the application page do not set cookies and do not use advertising or analytics trackers.
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
To use any of these rights, email info@theopenstate.co.uk. We will reply within one month. There is no charge.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please tell us first so we can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.
If we change how we use personal information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
